NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 28- The government has launched an initiative that aims to enhance traffic safety in the country, amidst increased road fatalities.
The worrying trend has been most evident during the COVID-19 pandemic that struck the country in March.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi launched the initiative on Wednesday, which is dubbed Usalama Barabarani Programme.
The 3-year safe roads programme will be implemented by the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) through the help of various development partners led by the European Union.
The nationwide sensitization and training programme will majorly target pedestrians, Bodaboda operators, and the Youth whose statistics make up a large percentage of casualties.
Reports indicate that 2689 persons have lost their lives between January 1 and September 30, 2020.
This is compared to the same period last year when 2655 lives were lost.
This is an increase of 1.3 percent, with the majority being the youth.
