NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 29- Will Major General Mohammed Badi succeed in his efforts to decongest Nairobi Central Business District?
It is the big question ahead of November when Nairobi Metropolitan Services will roll out an ambitious plan that if successful, might restore order in the green city under the sun.
But even before that can be implemented, the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has dared the military man “to bring it on.”
Like Governor Mike Sonko, they say, he too will fail “if he does not consult us. You do not wake-up and after having breakfast in the morning you come and thump your chest that you are going to throw the public transport out of the city. That is not acceptable.”
MOA chairperson Simon Kimutai on Friday said they will support Badi’s plans if their set of conditions are met; those of being consulted and a ban on CBD applied on Matatu operators.
“Involve us, we give you ideas on how to decongest the city,” Kimutai said.
“We are telling him (Badi) to buy a Matatu and see the pain we undergo. Don’t issue statements without weighing them, you are hurting many people. We are ready to cooperate in decongesting the city in a manner that is acceptable by us but not what you push down our throats.”
A previous attempt to kick PSV’s out of the city by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko failed due to lack of a proper strategy according to transport experts.
NMS plans to construct strategic bus terminus in all entry points of the city, where the journey for the Matatu will be ending.
During an interview at Citizen TV, Major General Badi was categorical that the CBD will be free of the Matatus.
Who will have the last smile, Major General Badi or the Matatu operators?
