NYAHURURU, Kenya, Nov 2 – A family of three and two other people are nursing serious injuries, after a leaking gas cylinder blew up in a house, after it was filled in a shopping center in Nyandarua North, Nyahururu county.

Jecinta Wanjiru recalls the Sunday incident that has now left her with permanent injuries on her face, legs and hands.

She had just secured the gas cylinder and upon arriving home started preparing evening tea, minutes later her sensory nerves were tingled, as an odorous smell rent the air.

She quickly rushed to turn off the gas cylinder as she took it out of her house.

“Just as I took it out, I noticed smoke and fire coming from the bottom of the cylinder and despite my efforts to ran to safety, it blew up,” said a bedridden Wanjiru.

Her two children were also injured in the blast.

Two of her neighbours were also injured as the fire extended to at least two homes.

“While I was in my house, I smelt gas and notified my wife, seconds later the fire spread into my house, fortunately my wife and child were not injured. I however sustained burns on my face, legs and arm. I thank God since it could have been far much worse, ” Joseph Maina, an immediate neighbour said.

The five who are currently admitted at the Nyahururu Referral Hospital remain in stable condition.

According to the hospital, this is the second case involving an accident of such nature.

Reports indicate that the previous victims also bought a gas cylinders at the same center as the victims.
