WAJIR, Kenya, Nov 5- A 22-year-old man was Thursday morning shot and wounded after he jumped into the Wajir County commissioner’s office in an incident.
Asumani Saidi Maembe was shot and wounded in the left leg before he was arrested by police who were manning the compound at about 4.30am.
He had jumped the perimeter wall of the office into the compound that had two police officers manning it.
According to the officers, they challenged him to surrender but he kept charging at them prompting one of them to fire in the air twice and later hit him in the leg near the ankle.
The man resides in Bura but it is not clear what he was doing in Wajir then.
He had a mobile phone at the time of the incident.
Police said they took him to the hospital as they wait to interrogate him further for more information.
North Eastern police boss Rono Bunei said the man was shot to disable him.
“We are yet to get his real motive, but we will get more,” he said.
He said they have heightened security operations in the region to stem off terror related fears that have been increasing in the past months.
Al-Shabaab terrorists have been attacking places in the region especially in Mandera and Garissa counties after breaching security zones, which left dozens of civilians and security officials dead and wounded.
The terrorists have been planting explosives on the routes used by the security agencies attacking them.
More personnel have since been sent to the area and operations by the Border Patrol Unit heightened to tame the surge.
