NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 7- Special Crime Unit detectives have arrested a 21-year-old man, accused of preying on college girls with false promises.

Rashid Barasa Omari was arrested after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations received numerous complaints of young college girls disappearing from their homes.

Omari, according to the DCI, ‘fishes’ her victims at the comment section of Tour and Travel advertisements social media pages.

“Omari presents himself as a person capable of sponsoring his victims to the advertised destinations,” the DCI said.

But it is what that happens after luring them to lodgings in Nairobi, that exposed his evil doings.

After sending them bus fare, detectives told Shahidi News, that the suspect “robs them off their valuables before disappearing to his hideout.”

During the arrest, police recovered various valuables including laptops, mobile phones and handbags belonging to several victims.

“We are appealing to young college students to be wary of such criminals preying on them on social networking sites,” the DCI said.

There has been an increase in such cases where criminals are using social media spaces to commit crimes that include luring young girls to sex dens according to police.

Such cases have significantly increased since March when institutions of learning were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
