    Olympic Champion Conseslus Kipruto faces defilement charges

    NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 16- Olympic steeplechase Champion Conseslus Kipruto was Monday freed on Sh200,000 bond by Kapsabet court, Nandi county after pleading not guilty to defiling a 15-year-old girl.

    The athlete was accused of defiling a 15 year old girl between October 20 and 21, 2020 in Motwot location. It is an offense to defile a girl under 18 years in Kenya under the Sexual Offenses Act 2006.
    He could be jailed for up 14 years if found guilty.

    He appeared before in court while in a hood to avoid cameras that were waiting.

    He appeared via zoom due to Covid-19 pandemic before magistrate D Ocharo and police tried to stop journalists from taking his pictures.

    The case will be mentioned on May 10, 2021.

    Kipruto won gold in men’s 3000 meter steeplechase at the 2016 Olympic Games in China and did the same in 2017 and 2019 in world championships in London and Doha respectively.

    He took the mantle from Ezekiel Kemboi who had dominated for long.
