NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 20- A 19- year-old man who rained blows on three police officers and bit one of them on his hand during a scuffle as he restrained them from recovering bhang from his house will pay a Sh10,000 fine.

In the alternative, Carlos Mandaga will serve a two months’ jail term.

He was handed the sentence by Kibera chief magistrate Joyce Gandani after pleading guilty to charges of wilfully assaulting police officers in due exercise of their duties contrary to section 103 of the National Police Service Act.

Mandaga had also admitted charges of possession of bhang.

He beat up senior sergeant Samuel Okech, Sergeant James Moturi and police constable Joel Mbilia at his house in Kibera, Nairobi on Monday.

Mandaga also admitted he resisted arrest by the three cops but claimed he did not know they were police officers because none of them was in uniform.

The officers finally recovered three rolls of bhang and additional 50 grammes of the weed which was not yet packed, from Mandaga’s house.

Mandaga admitted owning the bhang and told Gandani that it was for his own consumption.

He denied the charges of obstructing police officers on duty and theft charges.

In the theft charge, Mandaga was accused of stealing a K-Gas cylinder with a burner all worth Sh4,500 from Rose Adhiambo.

The cylinder was recovered from a shopkeeper who will also be charged with handling stolen property and theft.

Police were looking for Mandaga over the complaint made by Adhiambo when the scuffle ensued.

On the theft and obstruction charges, Mandaga was granted a Sh30,000 cash bail. The case will be mentioned on December 2.
