NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 30 – Police on Monday lobbed teargas canisters to disperse a section of Nairobi County legislators who were holding a press conference to declare their loyalty to city Governor Mike Sonko, who is facing a possible impeachment.

The Member of County Assembly were holding a press conference at a private residence in Riverside, when police stormed in and indiscriminately started dispersing them, at some point using teargas

Sonko who was present during the press conference managed to escape. The MCA’s denied appending signatures to initiate the intended impeachment of the embattled governor.

The MCAs disowned the impeachment attempts of Sonko saying that there are certain individuals, “out to malign the reputation of the Nairobi governor.”

“We are not interested in the noise, we are interested in service delivery for the people of Nairobi,” an MCA told Shahidi News.

“We have been intimidated; we have been arm-twisted but we have not in any way agreed to their demand. If there is going to be any impeachment on Thursday, the 90 members you see here will not and have not participated. We have not even delegated that authority to anybody to do it on our behalf.”

Close to 30 police officers stormed the venue dispersing the MCAs who scampered for safety.

Police have however denied that they have arrested Nairobi governor Mike Sonko.

“Sonko was aware of the press conference and came to cheer on the MCAs, minutes later however once police arrived at the scene, he was told to leave the area as police fired teargas,” a source told Shahidi News.

Police said they dispersed the legislators for not following the Ministry of Health COVID-19 protocols.
