GARISSA, Kenya, Dec 2- One police officer was Wednesday morning seriously injured and another is missing after suspected Al-shabaab militants attacked Amuma police patrol base in Fafi, Garissa county.
The officers were at the base at about 2 am when the gunmen who were heavily armed fired at them for about ten minutes before escaping.
The station armory was badly damaged in the attack.
Police say the search for their missing colleague is ongoing while the injured one is stable at a local hospital.
An assessment done at the scene show the attackers were armed with rocket propelled grenades and they escaped as a police reinforcement approached the area.
North Eastern head of police Rono Bunei said they are yet to get the millitants and more patrol personnel have been deployed to the area.
“Such an attack cannot happen without the knowledge of some locals. We need their support to win this war,” he said.
He added more personnel had been sent to the region to tame the trend.
There have been attacks staged by the militants in counties neighbouring Somalia amid efforts to contain the situation.
On Sunday, five police officers were seriously wounded when their vehicle ran over a hidden improvised explosive device in Rhamu, Mandera county in the latest similar incident.
The vehicle was escorting a public service vehicle when the IED was detonated.
Three of the officers were later flown to Nairobi for medical attention.
Such attacks have left dozens of security personnel with serious injuries and scores dead. Police say some locals collude with the militants who cross from Somalia to stage the attacks.
