NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec, 7 – The Senate will Wednesday hold a special sitting for the hearing of charges levelled against Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, days after he was impeached by Members of the County Assembly.
In a gazette notice dated Monday 7, Speaker of the Senate Kenneth Lusaka has appointed Wednesday 9 as the day for the special sitting of the senate.
It will be held at the Senate chamber.
The session for hearing of the motion will commence at 2:30PM.
The hearing of the motion was announced after it was agreed upon by the requisite number of senators.
The speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly Ben Mutura last week on Friday wrote to the senate speaker informing him that a motion to impeach the governor had been approved.
The senate will be adjourned on Tuesday until the special sitting to pave way for the special session on Wednesday.
Sonko was impeached on December 3 in a controversial vote marred with accusations of fraud.
Some 88 MCAs out of 122 were in favour of the ouster motion.
Two members opposed the vote while 20 abstained from the vote.
Only 82 MCAs were required to vote in favour of the imp cement motion.
Some 58 MCAs were present during the vote in the county assembly, attaining the required quorum while other voted virtually.
Governor Sonko had attempted to prevent his ouster by flying several county legislators to Diani, Kwale county, but the attempts proved futile.
Meanwhile, the high Court on Monday stopped the disbursement of Sh27.5b budget from Nairobi City County Government to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services for transferred functions until the case filed by Governor Sonko, challenging huge allocation to Major General Mohammed Badi led authority is heard and determined.
