BUNGOMA, Kenya, Dec, 9 – Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Bungoma County are investigating an alleged rape incident involving a 16 year old student at Lugulu Girls High school that has sparked demonstrations in Webuye town.
The alleged attempted rape incident according to police reports occurred Monday evening at the school’s ablution block.
The young girl was taking a shower, police said, when the incident occurred at around 1AM Monday.
The school principal Dinah Chebii Cheruiyot who reported the matter said that the young girl was taking a shower when an unidentified male entered the bathroom and attempted to forcefully grab her.
“Screams from the young girl however repelled the alleged male who run from the bathroom as other students and teachers quickly arrived at the scene in anger,” Valerian Obore, Webuye sub county commander said.
The young girl did not sustain any injuries according to police reports.
The students however, Tuesday morning accused the school administration of ignoring their plight and safety.
The took to the streets demanding an audience with the county director of education as well as the county police commander.
Bungoma Quality assurance Director Caleb Omondi visited the school and addressed students, desribing the incident as unforunate and criminal in nature.
“We are working very closely with police to identify and solve this matter. Police will do investigations and those found culpable the law will take its course. Anything affecting Lugulu girls, affects bungoma county. We ask for patience and cooperation.”
Detectives have already started recording statements from the students and school administration.
Students have in the past reported alleged attempted rape incidents to the school administration pointing an accusing finger to unknown individuals who have entered the school compound during the night.
Investigations are currently underway.
In 2018, a similar incident which sparked national anger was reported after a 16 year old girl from Moi Girls School, Nairobi was raped.
The safety of learners in schools continues to be a huge challenge with stakeholders in the education sector calling for a review of the public school safety manual to seal any possible loopholes.
