BUSIA, Kenya, Dec, 9 – One person was injured Monday night at Obekai market, Teso South in Busia after gun wielding robbers descended on a petrol station and M-pesa shop, stealing thousands of shillings and goods of unknown value.
The injured man has been identified only as Emmanuel.
According to residents, the 2 suspected robbers descended on the normally quite village at 7.10PM wielding firearms .
They were shouting and directing residents to wear face masks at the same time ordering them to close their businesses and proceed home.
“They were carrying guns and we even thought they were police officers because who would even do that and start ordering people to wear face masks and go home that early,” said an agitated resident.
During the Monday night incident, the robbers are then said to have stormed the local petrol station, assaulting and injuring the service attendant.
“They hit him with the back of their guns on his head and stole the money he had, those that were nearby escaped to safety,” another said.
The robbers are then said to have stormed an M-pesa shop, forcing the attendant to lay on the ground as one of the customers fled the scene screaming.
An unknown amount of money was stolen alongside several mobile phones at the shop.
“Police need to enhance patrols in this area. How can men just carry guns in the open without any fear,” said a resident.
Police in Teso South are investigating the matter.
