NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 11- Kenyans can now report any incident of crime to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) anonymously, following the launch of a hotline call centre.
Using 0800 722 203, a person can notify detectives of an incident as it happens.
The number is toll-free according to the DCI.
The launch was officiated by visiting United Kingdom Minister for Africa at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs James Duddridge.
“The initiative will provide an opportunity to members of public to report potential criminality in action from any part of Kenya,” Minister Dudridge said.
“We have seen similar hotlines deliver significant successes in the UK and elsewhere, and we hope this initiative will succeed here in Kenya too,” he said.
DCI Director George Kinoti said the call centre will be a “boost to the country’s security system.”
The DCI boss assured that the call centre would be manned 24/7, with specially vetted and trained multi-lingual officers of professional customer relations taking charge of the centre.
“This is a line which even 100 people can call at the same, but due to the current capacity, we shall be able to receive seven calls at the same time. All the calls will be attended to in real time,” DCI Kinoti said.
He has urged Kenyans to report on all crimes but mostly those touching on Gender-Based Violence, Female Genital Mutilation and early and forced child marriages among others.
Other cases one can report include those of sexual exploitation of children, sexual crimes including sexual assault, rape; abuse of a boy child through sodomy, child cyber bullying and online stalking.
Further, Kenyans can report cases of domestic violence, children servitude and forced domestic labour.
