NYANDARUA, Kenya, Dec, 16 – The National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) has called on motorists plying unfamiliar routes to observe road safety regulations in order to avert accidents during the festive season.
Speaking during the smart driving licence registration drive in Ol-Kalou, NTSA head of communication Dido Guyatu, revealed that the authority was anticipating an increase of vehicles on the roads as Kenyans scramble to travel to the countryside and other holiday destinations across the country.
“The Authority has noted that there was a need for drivers and members of the public to be more vigilant while engaging in longer and unfamiliar routes especially during the festive season. We must be extra cautious during this period,” Guyatu said.
According to statistics from NTSA, fatalities on Kenyan roads have hit 9.4 percent with a high number being reported among motorcyclists.
A nationwide crackdown is expected in the coming days to weed out drivers defying safety rules.
Drivers found to be in contravention of the laws will soon be required to undergo refresher courses to familiarize themselves with road safety rules.
In some cases the authority has warned it will have rogue drivers licenses revoked indefinitely.
“Everyone should take responsibility for their lives as the government does its part. Lets follow road safety rules,” he said.
A multi-agency team is before the Christmas festivities set to reveal new measure that will avert deaths on highways.
The regulations will also be in line with the COVID-19 regulations.
