NAKURU, Kenya, Dec, 16 – Tension remains high at Oljorai farm in Gilgil following clashes between two warring groups over land ownership that is now threatening the security of the area.
According to police reports, one person sustained serious injuries during the clashes on Wednesday afternoon after being shot with arrows as he allegedly set up camp in the disputed farm.
Speaking to Shahidi News, Nakuru County Commissioner Erastus Mbui said the clashes started after 25 people invaded the farm armed with crude weapons.
“We believe the people are from Solai in Rongai sub-county. They started saying that the land belonged to them however when asked for the proper documentations, they failed to provide them,” Nakuru County Commissioner said.
Mbui meanwhile said that a man injured during the violent confrontation was rushed to hospital and is in stable condition.
“We don’t want to see any form of retaliatory attacks. We have deployed a contingent of police officers on the ground to quickly restore peace. Residents moving forward must follow the due process when claiming ownership of any property. We need to see the proper documentations,” he said.
Menaheile, a group identified as Solai Ruyoibei through its representative Wilson Cheptumo, claimed that they have a court order which granted them ownership of the settlement scheme.
“Tension between us and the Oljorai company has been raging on for quite some time,” Cheptumo said.
Oljorai land buying company chairman Peter ole Sono who was notified of the invasion Wednesday afternoon however said that the matter is an active case before the court of appeal.
