TAITA TAVETA, Kenya, Jan 12- A Kenya Air Force aircraft crashed Tuesday as it flew from Nairobi to the coast.
The Harbin Y-12, crashed in Voi, Taita Taveta County as it cruised from Moi Air Base, Eastleigh, Nairobi.
It is not clear how many passengers were on board and what mission it had been assigned. Locals said they saw many ambulances rush to the scene of the incident as it was cordoned off.
Department of Defence said recovery efforts were underway without elaborating on the state of those on board.
Harbin Y-12 or Yunshuji-12 is a twin engine light multi role aircraft designed and developed by Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation (HAMC) of China.
The Y-12 is principally used for both passenger and cargo transportation.
The maiden flight of the aircraft was completed in July 1982.
