KIAMBU, Kenya, Jan, 26 – The main suspect in the macabre killings of four family members and a farm hand, was on Tuesday at the Kiambu Law courts declared mentally unfit to take plea and subsequently stand a trial.
Lawrence Warunge appeared before Kiambu Chief Magistrate Patricia Gichoi.
The court was presented with a psychiatric report corroborating the decision that the suspect was not fit to stand a trial.
The prosecution however sought orders to detain Warunge for a further 30 days. They were granted.
Warunge will remain in police custody where he will undergo constant medical check-ups and his mental state evaluated.
The suspect will remain in police custody until March 1 when the matter will be mentioned before Chief Magistrate Gichoi.
Meanwhile, the second suspect, who is Warunge’s girlfriend Sarah Muthoni was released and is set to be used as a prosecution witness in the murder case.
On Monday, the two were expected to be presented in court but only Muthoni was appeared.
The prosecution was granted a permission to hold her for a day before she’s set free.
This was seen as a last minute effort to secure the second accused as a prosecutor witness.
An autopsy report conducted earlier by Government Chief Pathologist Johansen oduor revealed that there was a likelihood that the accused committed the heinous crimes on his own as witnessed by the nature of injuries on the victims.
