NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 28- A youthful woman who allegedly conned three siblings, a neighbor and a businessman of Sh180,000 each at her office along Moi Avenue promising to secure them jobs in Canada was charged with obtaining money by false pretenses.
Mercy Wamucii Wangari is accused of obtaining the money from Ann Wanja Karanja and her sister and brother Maria Waria Karanja and Stephen Karanja respectively.
She is also accused of conning the three siblings’ neighbor Peter Mwaura Kamau and Abdisirat Hassan of their money on diverse dates between September 29 and October 15 last year at her Nazarite Trading Company Limited offices.
Ann Karanja had learnt of the Canada jobs from Wangare and she roped in her siblings.
Their neighbor, Kamau who overheard them also joined them before he lost money.
Hassan had learnt of the jobs from members of the public and got interested.
The six also lost Sh350,000 each during the alleged fraud.
The complainants paid Sh150,000 as the recruitment agency fee and air tickets, and additional Sh30,000 for processing of travel documents.
There were later required to pay the USD3500 for labour market impact assessment which was to be done at Maldives before connecting a flight to Canada.
Wangari is accused of obtaining money from the five complainants falsely pretending that she was in a position to secure each of them jobs in Canada, jointly with others at large.
She allegedly started playing hide and seek with the complainants until they reported to police.
She was summoned to Parklands police station where she showed up with her lawyer before she was arrested.
Wangari denied the charges before senior principal magistrate Esther Bhoke of Kibera law courts.
She was freed on a Sh300,000 bond with a surety of similar amount and an alternative cash bail of Sh80,000.
The case will be mentioned on February 9.
