NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 4- A motorist, Abdallah Mohammed who got involved in a minor road accident with a motorcyclist was robbed of his Sh500,000, in yet another incident involving boda boda riders.
A group of riders had gathered around his car following the minor accident in Mombasa on Wednesday.
And after talks, the motorist agreed to settle the damages caused by paying Sh5,000.
He went to his bag to get the money and at this point, the riders saw the Sh500,000 he had.
“They grabbed all the cash and fought over it before they rode off to unknown destination,” a senior detective privy to the incident told Shahidi News.
Efforts to track all the five riders involved are on going, police assured.
The incident was reported at the Nyali police station with the victims telling Shahidi News, “It was a matter I thought was under control since we agreed on the settlement. I did not see what happened coming.” Said Abdallah Mohammed.
The police boss has since put boda boda riders across the country on spot, saying an operation to weed out criminals will soon be launched.
He said the National Police Service is already mapping out hotspot areas, ahead of a major security operation to weed out rogue operators following increased accidents.
“Recent incidents indicate that victims of accidents where boda boda riders are involved have been assaulted and, in some instances, their vehicles burnt,” he said in a statement.
“It is against this backdrop that I caution all boda boda riders and operators against such uncouth and uncivilized manner of addressing issues. This is in contrast to the stipulated laws and regulations in the country.”
