NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 4- Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is set to spend five more nights in custody after bail ruling was pushed to Tuesday, Kiambu court administrator said.
The ruling by Senior Principal Magistrate Stella Atambo on Sonko’s bail application in his assault case was postponed to February 9.
The Magistrate said she is not ready and has not had enough time to compile the final ruling.
Sonko is facing various charges including assault, robbery with violence and destruction of property charges.
Meanwhile, the embattled former Governor is expected at Kahawa Law Courts, where he is facing terror related charges.
Detectives have applied to have him detained for at least 30 days in Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
The Anti-terror Police Unit (ATPU) detective, Chief Inspector Newton Thimangu told the court that the unit had information of plans to destabilise the national security, with Sonko allegedly being at the epicenter.
“It is believed that the suspect herein is recruiting a militia group to disrupt the peace and stability of the nation leading to anarchy which can escalate to civil disobedience of law and order,” Chief Inspector Thimangu said.
In the litany of charges, Sonko is accused of procuring uniforms resembling those of the military and associated with a terrorist group.
The said uniform, the court heard, Sonko has been spotted wearing in public “in disregard to the law and regulations restricting use of such attire by non-security agents.”
The court was also presented with an exhibit, in form of a photo depicting Sonko and one of his aides, wearing the attires.
“This coded signals portray that the militia are ready and that they will be armed to create a threat to the stability of this countermand to the citizens of this country through triggering acts of war within the boundaries of Kenya,” the Investigating officer said.
“The suspect has started arming his private security agents with full military attire namely military boots, military jungle uniform and firearms,”
The ATPU detective also informed the court that Sonko was connected to financing of terrorism activities and that he was in advanced stage of procuring arms and ammunition, using a wide syndicate which is complex and sophisticated.
