MACHAKOS, Kenya, Feb, 9 – A Machakos court has sentenced Stephen Ngila, the man who chopped off his wife’s,(Jackline Mwende) hands back in 2016 to 30 years in jail.
Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Brenda Bartoo, Ngila was deemed unremorseful to the brutal attack he meted on his wife on the night of 21 July, 2016.
Bartoo revealed that the courts had been presented with the victim impact statement on the 8 February from the probation department with the accused in his mitigation saying that he was not remorseful for the offence he committed as the courts ruled that the offense was, “grave and punitive.”
“For that reason I therefore proceed and sentence you for the offense of attempted murder contrary of section 220(a) of the penal code and that you will serve an imprisonment of 30 years.” Ruled Senior Resident Magistrate Brenda Bartoo.
The courts further ruled that Ngila has 14 days to appeal the ruling.
“The offence committed was great though the victim of the case did not wish for any restitution.”
Ngila, had back in 2016 attacked his wife with a machete chopping of her hands while at the same time inflicting injuries on her face, head and even her legs leaving her for dead.
The incident occurred in Uuni village, Masii in Mwala, Machakos County.
“I am very thankful for the court ruling. I thank God. Only God will serve the real justice to him. I was not born without my hands, this man did this to me.” Said, Jackline Mwende.
Mwende said that despite the brutal events that nearly saw her lose her life, she has been able to continue enjoying life and thanking God since, “I could have died.”
“This man is heartless, he wanted to end my life. my parents have been ill since the incident and all this is because of what he did to me. they are very old and always concerned about my well-being.”
Following the incident, well-wishers helped Mwende secure prosthetics which restored 80 percent of her hand mobility.
They limbs mimi the human anatomy and rely on naturally generated muscle energy for movement.
“Though I am very thankful, the prosthetics at times cause me a lot of pain and doing basic things like going to the toilet I have to be assisted. I would like any well-shiner to assist me in any way.” Said a teary Mwende.
