NAIROBI,Kenya, Mar, 23 – 57 Kenyans who were this past week arrested and detained at the Kilimani police station for Violating COVID-19 rules will now engage in community service for a week.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) revealed that a Kibera court made the ruling after the 57 were released on a community service order.
The directorate of Enforcement under the NMS will now delegate and oversee that the terms of the community service are adhered to. The 57 people are now expected to report to the directorate at 8:00AM to 5:00PM for the next week.
Terms of the service will now see them commence on a cleanup exercise at designated locations including: the Marikiti and Muthurwa public markets.
Others will be deployed to the Globe roundabout and areas along the Nairobi river.
“This will be a new trend now. You will be held and committed to community service if you are flouting the rules,” Asserted Kilimani Police Boss Vitalis Otieno.
Otieno urged Kenyans to remain vigilant and comply with the COVID-19 regulations in order to combat the spread of the corona virus even as the country battles a deadly third wave.
“The victims were found drinking at a bar on Marsabit Plaza along Ngong Road past midnight on Saturday and Sunday.”
In the court ruling meanwhile those on community service risk further punishment if they do not abide by the terms of their release.
As the 57 embarked on a clean up exercise Monday supervised by NMS directorate officers around the Uhuru Park area, police are expected to crackdown on entertainment joints, leading further operations along major highway for those flouting traffic rules.
As of Tuesday, 1,127 people tested positive for COVID-19 with 25 recorded deaths in the last 24 hours.
