MACHAKOS, Kenya, Apr, 6 – Police are investigating an incident where a school principal uploaded an examination paper on her WhatsApp status early Tuesday morning.

Betta Mutuku Kavoi, the principal A.B.C Kiseveni Secondary School in Machakos County however denied the accusations, after detectives acting on a tip stormed the examination center as the KCSE examination was ongoing.

Candidates were sitting for their Mathematics paper 2 examination.

Mutuku however told detectives who took her in for questioning that, “I have no idea how that ended up on my phone” as she pleaded for her innocence.

Despite detectives accusing her of taking them on a ruse, Mutuku said that she has been teacher for many years and that she would never commit such a crime.

“I know it is not easy to defend myself but first of all, I am a God fearing person, I have been a teacher for many years and I don’t know what happened,” the besieged principal said.

The principal, had in the morning told detectives that she first received a photograph of the examination paper from an unknown number and did not know the person who sent it since the photograph was not even on her phone.

Detectives have since confiscated her phone which is set to subjected to a forensic analysis at the cyber crime unit baser the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

“In her phone status, she had put the national examination mathematics paper 2 which was starting this morning. We received the report and confirmed the incident that the exam paper had been uploaded. She however denied ever uploading it despite confirming it was the one candidates were doing in the morning,” Machakos head of Criminal Investigations, Rhoda Kanyi said.

Sleuths meanwhile are yet to establish the motive of the post, since no candidate upon search by invigilators, center managers and police confiscated any mobile device from the candidates.

“We want to know where the exam paper originated from and how it ended up on her WhatsApp status. This is our main priority. If she is found to have committed the offense, then she will face the law and be subjected to KNEC and TSC guidelines,” Kanyi said.

Mutuku has been the principal of of the School in since 2008.

She was set to retire in the coming years.

Thousands of candidates are sitting for their KCSE examination across the country even as the Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha warns of attempts by several people to engage in examination cheating.

Several people have already been arrested for engaging in examination malpractices.

Police alongside education stakeholders have since mapped out the country, and identified counties seen as hotspots.

Despite various measures meant to curb the menace being intiated over the years, it continues to persist.
