KILIFI, Kenya, Apr 7- The country has lost 15 lives to a grisly road accident that occurred on Wednesday morning at Kwamkikuyu area along the Malindi-Mombasa highway.

The incident happened after two buses collided head-on, police and witnesses told Shahidi News.

It involved Muhsin bus from Mombasa to Garissa and a Sabaki shuttle minibus heading to Mombasa from Marereni.

Both drivers died on the spot.

Kilifi County Commissioner Kutswa Olaka confirmed 15 people died and another 14 were injured in the crash.

According to witnesses, the bus heading to Garissa was overtaking when it lost control, hitting the shuttle.

Of those injured, police said some are in a critical condition.

Police and locals blamed ongoing road construction at the scene for the accident as the road was raised and has not been completed for months.

Teams from police, Kenya Red Cross, Kilifi county government officials and well-wishers responded to the scene.

“Regrettably, accidents have continued to claim precious lives on our roads, despite persistent calls to motorists,” Governor Amason Kingi said.

Road fatalities claims more than 3,000 lives annually in the country, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority statistics.
