LAIKIPIA, Kenya, May 25 – Two days after Gladys Nyaruai, 38, was allegedly brutalized for refusing a man’s sexual advances, her family is now demanding justice.
According to the family and police reports, Nyaruai had gone out on Sunday evening with a man now identified as Jack Makokha at a popular joint in Nanyuki town when the altercation quickly turned fatal.
The accused, currently in police custody, is said to have made numerous sexual advances on the deceased despite her constantly declining.
“The owner of the premise where they were drinking alcohol ordered everyone to leave as the curfew hour was approaching. It was then that Jack demanded to take Gladys home. She declined and an argument ensued, leading to the assault,” a witness said.
According to the deceased’s elder brother, Kinyua Hunja, this is not the first time her sister has been assaulted, citing a previous incident where the suspect allegedly broke her hand after turning down his sexual advances.
“This past Sunday, he dragged my sister on to the road and beat her, leaving her by the roadside to die,” he said.
Nanyuki Central Location Chief Joseph Lopeyok confirmed the incident saying the suspect is currently being held at the Nanyuki Police Station ahead of being arraigned.
The deceased was a mother of one.
The family was notified of the incident on Monday morning after residents found her by the road barely conscious.
She was then rushed to the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital’s Emergency Unit and despite an attempt to have her moved for specialized treatment, she was shortly after pronounced dead.
“We want justice for our sister,” asserted Hunia.
The body of the deceased is being preserved at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary.
