MAKUENI,Kenya, June 4 – Three suspects were Friday arraigned at the Makueni Law Courts and charged with fraud and obtaining goods under false pretenses.

The three:Nelis Kinyua, Paul Kimani and Grace Wambui were presented before Makueni Resident Magistrate Joan Otieno.

They were arrested Wednesday by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after they were implicated to have allegedly presented a fake cheque to a proprietor of Mkamithi Agrovet in Wote town, Makueni county.

The suspects further attempted to purchase goods worth Sh277,248.

The court was informed that one of the suspects, Nelis Kinyua, visited the shop and posed as a customer subsequently ordering goods promising to collect them at a later date.

He later returned with two other suspects: Paul Kimani and Grace Wambui and presented the cheque to the proprietor in an attempt to acquire the goods.

Detectives were later called into action after the matter was reported, however upon being directed to stop and surrender themselves, they fled the scene while on a Toyota Fielder vehicle.

The officers then engaged them in a pursuit chase, shooting at the vehicle as they deflated its tires. They were shortly after arrested.

The prosecution sought 14 days to detain the suspects in order to complete their investigations that include verifying the authenticity of the cheque and ownership of the vehicle.

The prosecution led by lawyer, James Kihara also told the court that they will have to verify the hand writing on the cheque.

The suspects objected the terms of the application seeking a reduced time to be held.

Magistrate Otieno however granted the prosecution 10 days with the matter now set to be mentioned on June,22,2021.

The suspect will detained at the Makueni police station.
