Kenya’s security agencies to get Sh294.5 billion in 2021-22 budget

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 10- Kenya security agencies have received Sh294.5 billion, to help the country boost its safety amidst growing threat of terrorism and white-collar crimes.

The amount will be shared amongst the National Police Service, Defence, and the National Intelligence Service.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani said Sh119.8 billion for Defence, Sh42.5 billion for the NIS and Sh110.6 billion for policing and prison services.

To support police modernization, the Treasury allocated NPS some Sh1 billion.

To enhance the war on crime, Sh1.5 billion was set aside for the National Communication and Surveillance System and Sh335 million that will be used to equip the national forensic laboratory-based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

“Enhanced national security will create an enabling environment for business to thrive while aiding faster economic recovery,” he said.

The 2021-22 budget estimates amount to Sh3.6 trillion.

Other allocations include Sh4.8 billion for medical insurance for the National Police Service and Prisons; Sh2.3 billion for the group personal insurance for National Police Service and Prisons as well as Sh1 billion for the National Integrated Identity Management System.

To enhance good governance and scale-up fight against corruption, he set aside Sh3.3 Billion for EACC, Sh3.2 Billion for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Sh7.6 Billion for DCI, and Sh5.9 Billion to the office of the Auditor-General.
