NAIROBI, Kenya, June 10 – Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has directed the Coast Regional police commander to launch an inquiry against presidential hopeful Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi, after he was accused of assaulting a woman.
Mutyambai said once the matter is fully investigated, a file be submitted to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for perusal and advice.
The woman claiming to be Kituyi’s girlfriend filed a police report at the Nyali police station in Mombasa County on May 22, 2021.
Diana Opemi Lutta, alleged that Kituyi assaulted her within the Tamarind Village while in their room.
She claimed that Kituyi pushed her from her bed and then continued to kick her even after she fell on the floor.
In an interview with the People Daily Newspaper, Diana claimed that she had turned down his sexual advances which caused him to be violent.
Kituyi has since denied the allegations of assault but acknowledged that a report had been filed at the police station.
“Someone had written a report claiming l had assaulted her but it was not true, I’ve never beaten any woman in my life nor do I intend to ever do it at any given time. We sorted out the case and it was withdrawn,” he said in a brief text message to a People Daily reporter.
Despite claims that the case had been withdrawn, police in Nyali say they are actively pursuing further leads.
Kituyi, a former cabinet minister and the immediate former United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary General has expressed interest in vying for the country’s top political seat.
If found on the wrong, this might dent his ambitions, political pundits have said.
