NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 15- At least 12 trucks were Monday impounded and drivers arrested by officers from the Axle Load Enforcement Highway Unit (ALEHU) who were on a crackdown on illegal parking along the Southern Bypass, Nairobi.
The drivers were set to be arraigned on charges of illegal parking.
Officials said parking along the road is illegal and dangerous to other motorists.
The move elicited debate on the need by the Kenya National Highways Authority to designate parking lots for these lorries for the drivers to rest and repair them if and when they have defaults.
Most drivers complain of lack of the parking yards hence they are forced to park on the roadsides.
Most Kenyans online called on Kenha and other agencies to construct the yards for the drivers for easy movements and operations.
Those affected had their number plates taken away before they would get them back after the arraignment.
