KIRINYAGA, Kenya, Jun 17- Police in Kirinyaga have arrested two suspects, accused of being members of a criminal gang identified as Wisame.
The two were arrested in Kutus area, with police saying they had recovered two homemade guns from them.
Kirinyaga East Sub-County Police Commander Anthony Mbogo said the two suspects have been engaging in criminal activities.
“We have been able to arrest two most sought members of the Wisame gang that has been on the run that has been terrorizing Kutus residents, we have also managed to get two homemade guns and stolen items,” he said.
They are specifically accused of terrorizing traders, torturing and extorting money from Kutus.
“We also recovered several items that we believe were stolen from members of the public,” Mbogo told Shahidi News.
The suspects are being held at Kirinyaga Police station, ahead of being arraigned on Friday.
An operation to weed out members of the criminal gang in the area has been ongoing, for one month now.
According to authorities, 10 suspects have so far been arrested and charged in court.
Kirinyaga County Commissioner Jim Njoka says the operation will not stop until the menace is contained.
“The war on crime is still on, those that think they can join the group are just wasting their time, I swear to have a peaceful Kirinyaga for all and business people have to work peacefully,” Njoka said.
“I pray that the courts may give the gang members hefty penalties, this will also be a contributor to prevent those that have minds to join criminal gangs in the county back-off.”
