KWALE, Kenya, Jun 23- An elite-squad of police officers has recovered more than 700 bullets, communication gadgets and an Ak 47 rifle, during a raid of an Al-Shabaab hideout in Kwale County.

The police officers, who were acting on intelligence, also recovered communication gadgets, a laptop and crucial data stored in 16gb flash disk.

The recovery happened in Bombo area of Matuga Sub-County, according to detectives who spoke to Shahidi News.

“The elite police unit was acting on intelligence reports,” a senior officer privy to he details of the incident and who sought anonymity said.

A suspect, who was on the police radar was killed during the incident, while two others “escaped with gunshot wounds.”

A manhunt operation for the two is currently ongoing.

It is believed the suspects were planning a terror attack in the country.

The body of the suspect was taken to Kwale Sub-County hospital mortuary for preservation, autopsy and subsequent identification.

The flash disk as well as the laptop are set to be handed over to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations forensic team for analysis.

Security agencies have heightened their vigilance across the country, following increased “movement by the terrorists.”

Northern Kenya and parts of Coast have been identified as more prone to attacks.

In Mandera, for example, more than 10 people have been killed in 14 days, several others injured. Three people were abducted on Tuesday.

Another attack on Tuesday still within the border County left 4 officers injured, including a deputy Officer Commanding Station.

They were ambushed while undertakign a security patrol by heavily armed militants.

On Wednesday morning, the Al-Qaeda linked militia group killed one police reservist and injured two others. They then proceeded to burn down two tractors at a dam site.

Police told Shahidi News that they were guarding Banyole dam which is under construction when they came under attack.

“The police reservists tried to repel them but it was too late. They got overpowered,” a security officer based in the area told Shahidi News.

Locals have reported seeing members of the killer group roaming freely in the villages, amidst ongoing efforts to free the area of terrorists.

Area leaders have been engaging in community talks, urging residents to report suspicious people and rooting for police-public partnership, in the war against the menace.
