NAKURU,Kenya, June 23 – A Naivasha based man, Samuel Mwaniki alias Machete, who was recently charged with 12 counts of rape and robbery with violence, Wednesday pleaded with the courts not to release him on bond citing that his life is in danger.

Appearing before Naivasha Senior Resident Magistrate Lyna Sarapai, the accused, urged the courts to remand him in police custody for his own safety.

The prosecution said that the government could not guarantee his safety should he be released.

An argument Magistrate Sarapai concurred with saying his life would be in danger following attempts by an angry mob to lynch him in the past.

“During his arrest members of the public were baying for his blood and police had to move him from Karai police post and Naivasha police station for his own safety. The State cannot guarantee his safety if released on bail,” said State Counsel Alex Ndiema.

The accused meanwhile pointed an accusing finger at his arresting officers, saying, “They tried to fix me as I had a pending case against them at the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA).”

On May 22, 2021, according to the prosecution, the accused was implicated in 12 incidents of rape.

In one of the incidents, a teenage girl was allegedly molested during a house party at Kayole Estate in Nakuru county.

He is said to have targeted his victims along the Nairobi- Nakuru highway as well as in residential areas in: Kayole, Karai, Mountain View and Mirera.

The accused who bears the monicker, machete after brandishing one at his victims also stands accused of four counts of robbery with violence. He is accused os atheling electronic goods.

During his arrest, police also recovered the machete he allegedly used to intimidate his victims.

Police tracked down the suspect, 10 days ago after pin pointing his location using a mobile phone he allegedly stole from one of his rape victims.

Mwaniki will be detained at the Naivasha GK prison.

The car will be mentioned on July, 6, 2021.
