KISII, Kenya, Jun 26- Tension is high in Kitutu Chache North Constituency, after a suspect died while in police custody in unclear circumstances.
The deceased was being held at Rioma Police Station awaiting to be transferred to a prison facility, after he failed to raise a Sh8,000 fine for flouting COVID-19 rules.
While residents read foul play following his death, police say the suspect felt unwell while in custody.
He was rushed to hospital according to police, where he died. Locals who spoke to Shahidi News said the man was not sick.
A postmortem examination is set to be conducted to establish the cause of death of the 25 year-old.
News of his death prompted fierce confrontation on Saturday evening, with residents pelting stones at the police station where he was being detained.
Police fired in the air in a bid to disperse the irate group. One person is said to have sustained a gunshot injury during the running battles.
