KISII, Kenya, Jun 28- Health workers from Keroka town in Nyamira County on Monday took to the streets, after their colleague was allegedly assaulted by police.
The said assault incident happened on Sunday night by police from Keroka Police Station, the health workers told Shahidi News.
They say the health worker was assaulted while leaving Keroka Sub-County Hospital for home, after a night shift. It happened right outside the gate of the hospital.
It was past curfew hours, but health workers are among the government listed essential services providers.
“Respect health workers,” went on the chants as the health workers peacefully protested in Keroka town on Monday.
“We have received your complain and we regret to hear such bad news committed by our officers. We have already launched investigation and we will hold the said officer responsible for the crime committed, ” the Officer Commanding Keroka Police Station James Magiri said.
He apologised for the said incident.
A health worker who spoke to Shahidi News and did not wish his name to be mentioned said it was not an “isolated incident.”
“It is so shocking that cases of police brutality are rising from this region in the name of implementing the Covid19 regulations. The police are using force to an extent of assaulting and arresting healthcare workers who are allowed to stay up to late because of the services they offer to this Country,” he said.
