NYANDARUA, Kenya, Jun 29- The brutal killing of a 25-year-old man in Nyandarua continues to be bounded in controversy, from how the incident happened to who committed it and now, to the sluggish manner in exposing them.
A near drama played out right in court on Tuesday, after the Officer Commanding Station in Ndaragwa Police Station protested continued holding of 15 suspects at the station, with nothing or little being done by his counterparts in the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to conclude the probe.
Two other suspects are being held in other police stations.
Amos Gichuki was killed on May 15 and according to detectives, the incident happened in a local pub and the body later taken to the house.
A week later, his decomposing body was found in his house at Suguroi village within the County.
When the investigating officer appeared before Nyahururu Chief Magistrate Charles Obulutsa on June 21, he pleaded for more time to conclude their investigations, which he was granted.
But with time lapse on Monday, the detective said he was not ready to prosecute the suspect. He still needed more time.
It is at this point the OCS raised his concerns over the continued holding of the suspects, since the holding facilities at the station were already congested.
“We have not completed investigations the file is still with the DPP and stones are proving hard to unturn and unravel. We have obtained call data on from the suspects’ phones and submitted them to DCI experts for analysis,” the investigating officer told the court.
Ndaragwa police station Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Sebastian Muika however said the detectives were taking long to conclude the investigations.
“We arrested all the suspects and handed them over to the DCI for investigations but there are no investigations that are being done. What they only do is to take them out of the cells every morning to busk outside and later take them back to cells in the evening,” a visibly agitated OCS said.
The Investigating Officer however pleaded with court to be granted for more time, to allow detectives receive blood and DNA samples analysis from the government chemist in Nairobi.
The OCS however complained that, “We have been remanding the suspects in our cells which are as small as two by eight feet for over 30 days now and little is being done by the DCI officers at the station to ensure that the suspects have been charged. The station is at a standstill and we can no longer arrest other offenders as our cells are currently full.”
The Magistrate directed that the suspects be released on cash bail, as detectives conclude investigations.
