KISII, Kenya, Jul 1- A family of 10 that was rendered homeless after their house collapsed have a reason to smile, after well-wishers came to their rescue.
After spending several days in the cold, they finally have a place to call home.
Henry Nyabuto, his wife and 10 children were left homeless when their grass thatched house collapsed following heavy rainfall in the area.
The incident happened in Bomachoge Borabu area in Kisii county.
The poverty stricken family resulted to live under a canopy of banana trees which they fashioned into a makeshift home, however only a few could be accommodated, as the rest were forced to sleep on a lone sofa, braving the cold nights.
“We were hopeless. And due to my failing health, we had retired to fate,” 55 year-old Nyabuto told Shahidi News.
With his state of health deteriorating, his wife was forced to step in as the family’s bread winner by undertaking manual work some 10 kilometers from their farm.
Kisii Police Commander Francis Kooli said he swung to action after he saw pictures of the family on social media.
“I was touched by the sad state the family was living in; together with my colleagues we contributed from our salaries and allowances and decided to donate for the poor family, ” Kooli told Shahidi News.
“Construction has started and we were impressed by the way the community welcomed us, they promised to provide manpower to ensure the family with the little kids is protected.”
The police boss said he was concerned that the children can easily fall victim of criminals and mostly the young girls.
Other well-wishers included local community leaders and politicians.
They include Kisii senatorial aspirant Okengo Nyambane and Dagoreti North Member of Parliament Simba Arati.
“It was painful to see children sleeping out in the cold,” Okengo said
