NAIROBI,Kenya, July 1 – The government will adapt a multi-pronged approach in dealing with organized crimes. A team drawn from various security agencies is undergoing training to effectively fight terrorism, piracy, poaching and human trafficking.
The training of security personnel is taking place at Kenya Navy Manda Base. Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Robert Kibochi launched the training on Wednesday.
Officers drawn from Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kenya Forest Service and National Youth Service and other concerned sectors will be prepared on how to jointly fight organized crimes that remain a threat.
Due uncoordinated surveillance and operations, terrorists, poachers and human traffickers, exploit the security lapses to cause harm in the country heavily relying on overwhelmed police officers.
“The exercise is designed to respond to emerging security threats, which require the employment of whole-of-Government approach in delivering comprehensive solutions to contemporary threats,” the the military a statement signed by KDF Spokesperson Colonel Zipporah Kioko.
Though there has been a lull in piracy incidences, Al Shabaab militants continue to wreak havoc in Mandera, Garissa and Lamu. Security agents are also unable to tame human trafficking and poaching.
A senior official at Department of Defence (DoD) said the multi-agency team will be equipped with necessary skills and tools to deal with these complex crimes. The training will be held in Garissa, Tana River and Lamu.
“Notably, movement and other activities by troops in the three counties is in line with the Joint and Multi Agency Field Training Exercise. During the exercise various civil-military cooperation activities, which respond to community needs will be identified and implemented,” said the military.
