NAIROBI,Kenya, July 6 – 23 immigrants of Eritrean origin have been arrested en route to Nairobi aboard a personal vehicle along the Opiroi-Maralal road.
Samburu Central Sub County police commandant Alex Rotich told Shahidi News the immigrants did not have travels documents nor permit to be in the country.
“Police were on normal patrols when they intercepted the vehicle and upon checking them they were Eritrea nationals without travel documents,” Rotich said.
In an effort to avoid detection, the vehicle was being driven through the wilderness in Opiroi area to Maralal early Tuesday morning.
It is not yet clear whether Nairobi was their final destination, with detectives now probing the possibility that smugglers might have had other plans to traffic them out of the country.
The 23 illegal immigrants are being held at the Maralal police station in Samburu Central.
he driver of the land cruiser was also arrested.
They will be arraigned in court Wednesday.
