KISII, Kenya, Jul 6- The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) has called for speedy investigations into the brutal killing of a farmer in Kenyenya, Kisii County.
The farmer, Peter Miruka was killed last week at a buying centre, allegedly by two clerks at a tea selling centre.
According to his relatives, he died instantly after he was hit on the head by a weighing machine, after a quarrel.
“My father had an argument with the center employees who did not want him to sell his tea leaves. While questioning them, they picked a weighing machine and hit him on the head,” his son told Shahidi News.
Residents who responded to screams by onlookers found the man dead.
“It was too late to safe his life,” a witness who was also among the first responders told Shahidi News.
The two KTDA officials have since gone into hiding after the incident.
KTDA Regional Manager for six zones in Gucha, Nyagetari Mangera condemned the incident saying investigations were underway.
“We have laws governing every sector and we have procedures when solving a problem but killing a person is the worst thing to do,” he said.
“We are optimistic that the two will be found and held culpable if found guilty of killing the man.”
His sentiments were echoed by Ogembo tea Factory director Omwanza Omweno, who asked officials at the factory and tea buying centers to respect farmers and provide services professionally.
“We ask workers to follow the right channel when solving a problem. Violence can never a means in a civilized society,” he said.
