NAKURU,Kenya, July 6 – Detectives from the directorate of criminal investigations have arrested five suspects that are part of a gang believed to have killed a truck driver last week in Naivasha.
The five suspects were arrested and found in possession of bales of flour that that matched batch numbers of the stolen goods.
The goods are said to have been worth Sh 1.8 million.
According to Naivasha DCIO boss Adan Hassan, following credible intelligence, the five were arrested after sleuths laid a trap for them.
“The suspects were in possession of wheat flour matching the batch number of the stolen bales. They are assisting us with investigations,” he revealed.
Hassan told Shahidi News the first suspected was apprehended in Maai Mahiu town on Saturday before proceeding to Njoro and Nakuru.
The other suspects were arrested this past Sunday.
Detectives in the region have meanwhile launched a manhunt for other members of the highway robbers.
“They first offloaded 600 bales at Kamundura area before the remaining consignment was dropped at Maai Mahiu area, with the body of the slain driver still in the vehicle,” said Hassan.
Detectives now believe the remaining suspects are the ones that killed the driver either around Mlolongo or Kamandura area.
Residents and truck drivers along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway, Bachuma along Mombasa highway, Manyatta area, Maunga and Makindu having been living in feat over the recent robberies.
The suspected are currently being questioned and will be arraigned in court.
Police said the thugs waylaid the driver in Salama area along Mai Mahiu-Naivasha highway.
According to authorities, the driver who initially resisted their attempts to hijack, was smothered to death.
“The thugs wanted to drive the vehicle towards Naivasha but realised that the road had been closed to pave way for the World Rally Championship event,” Naivasha Deputy Police boss Jared Marando told Shahidi News, during a phone interview.
The incident happened on Friday.
The driver was ferrying bales of white flour according to police.
The unknown assailants gained entry to the vehicle through the passenger’s door, which at the point was not properly locked.
His decaying body was found in the trailer just after Mai Mahiu town, with hands tied.
