NAIROBI,Kenya, July 15 – Detectives will now detain suspected serial killer Masten Wanjala for a period of 30 days, two days after he was arrested and led police officers to a thicket in Lower Kabete where the bodies of two deceased minors were recovered.
The self confessed killer was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts under a miscellaneous application where detectives sought to detain him in order to allow for further investigations.
In their submission, the prosecution told the court that the suspect, had been implicated in a series of disappearances involving minors.
The prosecution further sought time to travel to various locations across the country where the suspect is said to have killed and buried his victims.
Detectives are meanwhile also set to conduct an identification parade of the recovered bodies, conduct DNA tests as well as conduct a postmortem examination in order to identify the deceased.
Several key witness statements are also set to be recorded while recovered mobile phones are set to be analyzed by the cybercrime unit before the suspect is subjected to a mental assessment test.
The file is also set to be forwarded to the office of the director of public prosecutions for perusal and advice.
Wanjala will now be detained at the Shauri Moyo police station.
On June 30, a 13 year old boy,Charles Opindo Were, a standard six learner from Sagaret primary school in Majengo, in Nairobi county was reported missing and later found dead.
On July 8, yet another minor,Junior Mutuku Musyoki a 12 year old boy from the same school was also reported missing and subsequently found dead.
Preliminary investigations further revealed that as the parents reported the matter to police, they both received text messages from the same mobile number, demanding a ransom in order to reunite them with their children.
The phone numbers, police revealed were tracked down, with phone signals revealing them to be in Kitengela area and its environs. Eventually on July 13, the suspect, (Wanjala) was arrested at Kitengela Township.
He was later upon a procedural search by police found in possession of a mobile phone and sim card that was used to solicit for the ransom.
The suspect upon interrogation confessed to police to have kidnapped the minors and later led them to a thicket in Lower Kabete within Spring Valley police station where the bodies of the two minors were recovered.
He later confessed to having killing 10 other minors, within Machakos township, Mlolongo, kitengela, Nairobi and Kakamega.
Two other bodies have since been recovered on July 14 within Kingeero area in Kiambu county.
