NAIROBI,Kenya, July 21 – A prison warden is among four men arrested in connection with a botched abduction in Kasarani, Nairobi county.
The officer and his civilian accomplices were arrested after they attempted to allegedly extort Sh50,000 from a woman whose son the gang had kidnapped on Tuesday.
The abductors first posed as detectives from Directorate of Criminal Investigations, “arresting” the 20-year-old from his mother’s shop in Githurai 44.
They claimed they wanted to question the young man aged 20 over a certain matter. He was bundled into a waiting Mazda Demio car that drove off. Soon the man’s mother was called and told to send Sh50,000 in exchange for her son’s freedom.
The distressed woman sent Sh5,000 after a threat to kill his son was made should she fail to comply.
They instructed the woman to send the balance on four different mobile phone numbers.
A man who took the registration number plate of the car after becoming suspicious advised the woman against sending more money to the kidnappers.
The mother went and reported the matter at the Kasarani Police Station after which officers shortly after tracked down the gang.
“Meanwhile, we were able to know the owner of the car after conducting a search on the National Transport Safety Authority portal” said Kasarani Sub County Police Commander (SCPC) Peter Mwanzo.
When the owner was called, he told police he had hired out his car. It is believed the kidnappers abandoned the victim in Mwihoko after suspecting they were being trailed after the owner of the car called them.
They were finally intercepted along Kamiti Road where one of them was found to be a prison warder in possession of a pair of handcuffs.
“We understand he is a prisons warder but we are still interrogating him before conducting an identification parade,” said Mwanzo.
