NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 21- A suspected thug was shot dead and a pistol recovered from him in a police operation in Nairobi’s Kasarani area.
Police believe the deceased man was part of gangsters that are connected to a shooting incident that occurred at Githurai roundabout on Monday, where a man was shot on the right arm by gun toting hoodlums on a motorbike.
The thugs had just snatched a handbag from a lady who was walking home and opened fire on concerned members of the public who were responding to her distress call, detectives said.
The injured man was rushed to St John’s hospital in Githurai, where he was treated and referred to Kiambu Level 5 hospital for specialized medical attention.
In Kasarani, the suspect had tried to rob a pedestrian when police on patrol were alerted and responded killing him and recovered a weapon from him.
Security has been heightened across the country following a surge in cases of crime.
According to Inspector General of Police, anti-mugging police unit has been deployed across all major towns in Kenya, to curb the vice.
With COVID-19 pandemic and a failing economy, the trend ins unlikely to change according to security experts.
