NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 23- Vocal legislator Rigathi Gachagua might spend the weekend in custody, after he was arrested on Friday morning.
The Mathira Member of Parliament and a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto was arrested from his Karatina home in Nyeri County.
Detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations picked him up and brought him to Nairobi for processing ahead of possible arraignment.
Gachagua has been on the spot for allegedly engaging in money laundering to a tune of Sh12 billion, but he has since denied the allegations, which he says they purely are political.
During a recent TV appearance, he dared the DCI to have him arrested, so that he have a day in court and argue his “innocence.”
“As predicted, two dozens of DCI officers raided my Nyeri home and arrested me to face trumped up charges of money laundering. I am being driven to Nairobi at reckless speed to spend the weekend in cells,” he said in a Facebook post.
“I am happy it is finally over. It has been two years of hell; being arrested and released, writing countless statements, being persecuted in the media, intimidation and harassment to me and my family.”
The legislator expressed confidence that he will be vindicated by the court.
