    Daring Gang Disarm Police During ‘A 10- Minute’ Bank Robbery In Matuu

    MACHAKOS, Kenya, Jul 27- A manhunt has been launched for a gang that disarmed two police officers in Matuu, before storming inside an Equity Bank branch in the area.

    Preliminary investigations have further revealed that the bank manager Michael Muriithi notified police of the incident which occurred at around 9am.

    Five armed robbers entered the bank after ambushing, disarming and injuring the officers guarding the main entrance.

    A contingent of police officers from Matuu police station were shortly after dispatched to respond to the incident amidst a fiery gun battle that ensued.

    During the gun fight, police constable Dorothy Opili sustained injuries on her hip and left hand while her colleague constable Patrick Omusebe sustained bruises on both his hands. He was also injured on his private parts.

    The gang stole the officer’s two AK-47 rifles with 30 rounds of ammunition each.

    Several customers were also robbed of their money at the banking hall.

    Rosina Syombua told police the robbers stole Sh 51,860 from her, Rhoda Mbithe was robbed of Sh3,500, James Mulaka was robbed off Sh11,000 Lawrence Ngugi was robbed off Sh200,000 while Mary Kumama was robed of Sh 4,500.

    Police also told Shahidi News an unknown amount of money was also stolen from the bank teller.

    The officers have since been rushed to the Matuu Level four hospital and are in a stable condition,

    Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

    Yatta Sub-County Police Commander Mary Njoki said the thugs had posed as clients.

    “We will get them. We are already retrieving the CCTV footage for analysis,” she told Shahidi News on phone.
