ISIOLO,Kenya, July 28 – Police patrolling the Isiolo-Marsabit highway Tuesday evening apprehended a man transporting 19 kilograms of bhang worth Sh 855,000 destined for Nairobi.
The 21 year-old driver aboard a Toyota Succeed vehicle was also ferrying five secondary school students who told police they were going to school for the new term.
The stacks of bhang according to Isiolo County Police Commander Joseph Kigen, were concealed under the driver’s seat inside a fabricated metal compartment that nearly evaded police attention.
“It was stashed in a special compartment that was concealed using properly welded sheets of metal under the driver’s seat, therefore making it very difficult for the officers to detect presence of the illegal substances.” said Eigen who further said, “Officers manning the multi-agency road block were only able to detect the drug substances through help of sniffer dogs,” sad Kigen.
Sniffer dogs have aided police in the fight against drug trafficking particularly along border counties.
Kigen told Shahidi News, the vehicle is suspected to have been heading to Nairobi from Ethiopia.
The five students were released by police and provided with alternative transport means to return back to school.
“Drug traffickers have now devised new ways of ferrying the commodity from Ethiopia using motorbikes through smaller routes without road blocks, we are however working tirelessly to block these routes into our country.
The suspect will be arraigned Wednesday at the Isiolo Law Courts.
Police are now calling on members of the public to desist from being lured into the drug trade and instead provide security agencies with information that will lead to the capture of traffickers operating in the region.
