KITUI,Kenya, July, 30 – Two university students accused of raping an 18 year-old first year student were Friday arraigned at the Kitui Law Courts and charged with rape.

Appearing before Resident Magistrate Felistus Nekesa, the two from South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Biron Orwa 25 years old and Samwel Mulama, 22 years old, were charged separately with two counts of the sexual offences: rape and indecently touching the victim according to the charge sheet.

The prosecution told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 28, 2021 at the  Monte Cristo Club at Kwa Vonza trading center, Kitui.

The accused meanwhile denied the charges, pleading not guilty and were released on a Sh150,000 bond or a surety of a similar amount.

The case is set to be mentioned on August 11,2021.

According to police reports, the victim had initially gone to an entertainment joint in the company of her boyfriend during the fateful day.

Detectives further revealed that the two accused persons bought several rounds of alcoholic beverages causing both the victim and her boyfriend to become inebriated. It was at this point that the two allegedly took advantage of her after his boyfriend left while in drunken state.

Suspicion was raised by local residents after they saw the two accused persons leading the victim to an apartment building in the area.

Police were quickly called to the scene and arrested the two university students.

The victim was rushed to the Kitui General hospital for treatment.

Investigations into the matter are currently ongoing.
