MOMBASA, Kenya, Aug 9 – Security has been heightened in Mombasa county after machete wielding gangs attacked residents of Likoni, leaving nine people seriously injured.

The unknown assailants are said to have descended upon Bomani, Harambee and Jamvi la Wageni areas on Sunday night.

According to preliminary reports, the gang consisted of about 20 thugs who raided homes at around 7:30pm.

During the attack, one person saw their finger chopped off among them a 16 year-old secondary school student who had gone to the shop to buy basic home items.

Others, police say sustained deep cuts on their hands, chest and head.

Coast regional police Commander Manaseh Musyoka expressed concern over the rising cases of violence while at the same time reassuring residents that enough security officers will be deployed to the areas prone to attacks.

“One suspect has been shot dead while six others have been arrested at a witch-doctors house while undergoing rituals,” said Musyoka.

Residents are now expressing fear over the re-emergence of dreaded gangs ahead of the 2022 general election.

“After the gang members had left, l managed to run to safety and l was later on rushed to Likoni district hospital and thereafter referred to the Coast General hospital. l have since received treatment and I am awaiting to be discharged,” said one of the victims.

The machete wielding gangs police say are aged between 13 to 25 years old.
