NAKURU,Kenya,Aug 13 – After allegedly defying police summons, Chief Inspector Stephen Mumba appearing before a Nakuru court told principal magistrate Isaac Orenge that police raided Kapseret legislator Oscar Sudi’s home with the intention of arresting him.
Police raided his home on September, 11, 2021.
The legislator was being pursued by police after uttering what was termed as hate speech, in a viral video allegedly targeting the first family.
During the submissions, Chief Inspector Stephen Mumba told the courts that the arrest warrants was issued by Uasin Gishu county police commander Johnstone Ipara at the time.
“I am aware that the accused person had been issued with summons to appear before the police but chose to ignore that is why the police had to go to his house,” said Mr Mumba.
Sudi’s legal counsel Kipkoech Ngetich, however said, he was not served with the summons and did not see the documents directing he presents himself to police.
Sudi is facing charges of hate speech.
On the fateful day, according to preliminary reports, police camped outside Sudi’s home for close to five hours after the occupants n the home refused to grant them access.
Officers resulted to scaling the legislator’s perimeter wall and later broke into his house by breaking the door.
“We did not find the accused person inside but recovered weapons including guns which were confirmed to be legally assigned to the officers guarding the MP’s home,” said Mr Mumba.
Police further revealed that an officer was attacked with a machete during the incident while another civilian was allegedly shot.
Five witnesses are set to be presented in court as witnesses in the matter.
Sudi eventually presented himself to Langas police station on Seemlier 13, 2020.
The case is set to be heard on September 24,2021.
