NAIROBI,Kenya, Aug, 18 – Several Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers are under investigation for allegedly selling several military uniforms to members of the public in clear contravention of service guidelines.

According to an application filed at Kibera law courts by corporal Collins Alulu of the military police the officers allegedly made an estimated Sh500,000 from their sales.

Appearing before principal magistrate Sharon Maroro, corporal Alulu, did not however report the exact number of uniforms sold to civilians by the officers.

The type of uniforms sold was also not disclosed.

“Investigations have shown that during the period under inquiry, the holders of the mobile phone numbers who are service personnel connived to steal government stores under their care and sold them to civilians for personal use and it is believed that the proceeds of the sales were shared through Mpesa,” the application stated in part.

KDF’s Military Police (MP) has been tasked with establishing officers involved in the alleged sale as well as identifying whether others may have been involved in the criminal racket.

Corporal Alulu sought orders to have the special investigations unit of the Military Policebe granted access to the accused’s bank documents.

The items are considered part of government stores: limited to members of disciplined services.

They may include weapons, official military uniform among others.

“To effectively and conclusively investigate the complaint, it is imperative to obtain certified copies of bank statements of the mentioned accounts”. read a section of the application by Corporal Alulu .

Investigations commenced following  a complaint to the Ministry of Defence.

“The purpose of the investigations is to establish the veracity of the allegations made with a view to taking appropriate disciplinary actions against any service members found culpable,” the application stated.

Similar incidents involving sale of military uniforms were reported last year.
